The Louisiana Arson & Fire Prevention Association (LA&FPA) held the 2010 Annual Conference in Gretna June 3 - 5, 2010.

LA&FPA Past President H. "Butch" Browning, Jr. is Louisiana's Fire Marshal.


butch_browning.jpgBrowning, who entered public service in 1986 as an East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputy, later taught as an adjunct instructor at LSU Fireman Training in 1987 and 1998. Browning also served as Assistant Fire Chief for the District 6 Fire Department in Baton Rouge from 1987 to 1998, when he was promoted to Fire Chief.  He has served as the Gonzales Fire Chief since 2001.


After announcing the appointment, Governor Bobby Jindal said, "Butch Browning has an incredible wealth of experience in firefighting, fire training, response and emergency preparedness.  Ensuring the safety of Louisiana children and families is an incredibly important mission and the state will benefit from his leadership, knowledge and service."


Butch is a recipient of the LSFA Roy Robichaux, Sr. Legislative Award in 2000 and 2006 and the was named the 1996 Louisiana Fireman of the year by the American Legion.


Browning has an associate's degree in fire science from LSUE and received fire prevention training from the FEMA's National Fire Academy in Maryland, LSU FETI, and Oklahoma State University.  He is a registered EMT, a certified accelerant detection handler, and a peer counselor.  He is a member of the American Red Cross, the Louisiana Arson and Fire Prevention Association, the International Fire Chiefs Association and a Past President of the Louisiana State Firemen's Association.  Browning has also previously served on the Governor's Arson Strike Force Committee, as a former president of the Louisiana Arson and Fire Prevention Committee.


The LA&FPA congratulates Butch and looks forward to working with him as the State Fire Marshal's Office.
